Serkis' every nuance was picked up by several cameras positioned at precisely calculated angles to allow for the software to see enough information to process the image. Serkis's work was an interactive performance in a skin-tight CGI suit with markers allowing cameras to track and register 3D position for each marker. "Gollum" was the collaborative team's effort around Serkis's work in performance capture - an art form based on CGI-assisted acting. He spent four years in the part and received awards and nominations for his performance as "Gollum", a computer-generated character in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), which won 11 Oscars. In 1999, Andy Serkis landed the prize role of "Gollum" in Peter Jackson's epic film trilogy based on J.R.R. In 1987, Serkis made his debut on television, and he acted in several major British TV miniseries throughout the 1990s. He also appeared as "Potts" in the hit play, "Mojo", playing in front of full houses and earning huge critical success. In the 1990s, Serkis began to make his mark on the London stage, appearing at the Royal Court Theatre as "The Fool" in "King Lear", making his interpretation of "The Fool" as the woman that "Lear", a widower, could relate to - a man, in drag, as a Victorian musician. In 1989, he appeared in a stage production of William Shakespeare's "Macbeth", so beginning his long association with the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, where he would return many times, to appear in "She Stoops to Conquer", "Your Home in the West" and the "True Nature of Love", among other plays. He has thus appeared in a host of popular plays and on almost every renowned British stage. After that, he worked in touring theatre companies, doing it for no money, fueled by a sense of enthusiasm, moving to a new town every week. Instead of going to an acting college, Serkis, in 1985, began his professional acting career at the Duke's Playhouse in Lancaster, where he was given an Equity card and performed in fourteen plays, one after another, as an apprentice of Jonathan Petherbridge. Then, Serkis was asked to play a role in a student production, and made his stage debut in Barrie Keeffe's play, "Gotcha" thereafter, he switched from stage design to acting, which was a real calling that transformed his life. ![]() There, he became involved in mechanical aspects of the theatre and did stage design and set building for theatrical productions. Serkis studied visual arts at Lancaster University in the north-west of England. Benedict's School, a Roman Catholic School for boys at the Benedictine Abbey in London. His mother, Lylie (Weech), who is British-born, was busy working as a special education teacher of handicapped children, so Andy and his four siblings were raised with au pairs in the house. His father, Clement Serkis, an ethnic Armenian whose original family surname was Serkissian, was a medical doctor working abroad, in Iraq the Serkis family spent time around the Middle East, and for the first ten years of his life, Andy traveled between Baghdad and London. Serkis was born April 20, 1964, in Ruislip Manor, West London, England. Serkis has his own motion capture workshop, The Imaginarium Studios in London, which he will use for his directorial debut, Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (2018). In 2015, he had a small role in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). Serkis earned a Golden Globe Award nomination for his portrayal of serial killer Ian Brady in the British television film Longford (2006), and was nominated for a BAFTA Award for his portrayal of new wave and punk rock musician Ian Dury in the biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll (2010). English film actor, director and author Andy Serkis is known for his performance capture roles comprising motion capture acting, animation and voice work for such computer-generated characters as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001-2003) and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), the eponymous King Kong in the 2005 film, Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), Captain Haddock / Sir Francis Haddock in Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin (2011) and Supreme Leader Snoke in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015). Nowadays, most organizations use Git, and one of the popular and successful development models used by many organizations is Gitflow. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of a strong development environment when scaling your team’s capacity. If you’re ready to make your Git life easier, download GitKraken now! Then, download Git Succinctly, Syncfusion’s free e-book, to brush up on Git concepts. This is a guest post by Cagla Ertugrul, CEO, MONCCO PR. So, there you have it! Those are the 6 ways the Axosoft dev team has made working with Git easier in GitKraken. This way, you have oversight in your projects and can work independently on features and hotfixes while still being able to easily merge back in when you’re ready. Using this, you can work on a remote that you own, and then make a pull request to start the process of merging your edits back into the original repository. ![]() Forking means that you have a discrete repo cloned from the original. Working with branches is one thing, but when you want to get truly collaborative, you can work with forks, branches, and pull requests. The app will intelligently assume the most likely upstream and let you override this setting if you need to. GitKraken makes it easy to set upstreams. An upstream for a branch is the remote locations with which you push/pull that branch, and setting an upstream correctly is essential for workflows that incorporate pull requests into the main fork (see “Pull Requests” below). ![]() Remember refspecs? Upstreams are what we use to set refspecs for local branches. In the same way as cloning a repository, you can always directly add a URL if you’d rather. When adding a remote, GitKraken offers you a selection of forks of the currently open repository to add. Setting up remotes can be an annoyance, especially when you’re working with multiple remotes and upstreams. Git really comes into its own when you’re collaborating on projects. GitKraken has a preference section that allows you to add SSH keys to connected services, no CLI, no rsa copy-paste shenanigans. Working with SSH keys is a good way of getting the best of both worlds when it comes to security and user experience with SSH you pair up your keys with your services, set it up once, and you’re done. GitHub does make it easier to find your remote URL, but when cloning, GitKraken offers you a selection of repositories based on what remotes you have available in your service, and you can always just directly add a URL if you prefer. If you’re somewhat new to GitHub, or to working with remotes in general, understanding how remote URLs work or where to find them can be an obstacle. GitKraken, on the other hand, will only push the branch you select, so you won’t fall into this trap. Sounds good, right? Well, this default behavior updates all remote branches with the same name as local branches, and that can get messy. Git’s default behavior (if it can’t find an explicit refspec) is to push ‘matching’ branches, meaning every branch that exists locally will be updated remotely. Git uses something called refspec to define push behavior between local and remote branches. In GitKraken (on Windows), it’s as easy as checking/unchecking your AutoCRLF setting in Preferences > General. By default, Git has AutoCRLF set to ‘false’-set that to ‘true’ and be on your merry way. Fortunately, Git has an AutoCRLF option which will handle line endings for you. Did you know that Windows and Linux/Mac systems use different line ending characters? This can be a problem if you are moving or sharing between operating systems in your projects. But in truth, we rarely think about line endings as potential issues. Line endings, eh? Can’t live with ’em, can’t live without ’em. These are some of the irritation factors and obstacles that Axosoft developers experienced in the past, and how they solved them in GitKraken. So take a moment, breathe deep, and read on. Part of the ethos behind creating GitKraken, a cross-platform Git GUI, was to help put Git into human terms. ![]() But the learning curve is notoriously steep, and finding a path to understanding Git concepts can be difficult. Whether you’re working solo on a project and need a decent version history at your disposal, or you’re working collaboratively in a team in which you’re contributing regular updates to code, Git is an invaluable tool. Git is an increasingly essential tool to work with. (This guest blog was written by John Sparrow from Axosoft.) ![]()

You can’t shade around the highlight with a deep blue.ĭevelop contrast by having a range of tones in your colored pencil drawing going from very light colors to very dark ones. You can’t create a very dark shadow using light pink. ![]() This includes reds, greens, blues and even greys. In this example you can see that I picked a single purple to figure out all the darks first. Colored pencil shading in one color is key to create volume in portrait drawing. Instead, pick one color to develop all your shadows first. Students love to jump in using all possible colored pencils to draw one thing. Keep it simpleĭraw the shadows in one color first. If you’re testing dark blue colored pencils based on your reference, do you see that not all of them fit that particular color range? 3. Always test your hues to do consistent colored pencil shading. You can adjust your pencil pressure drawing in one blue to get a range of blue tones (or values). There are many similar colors that you don’t have to use. Start testing these colors right next to your reference and you’ll see that some colors are totally off and don’t belong as your main hue. ![]() If you see lots of blue in your reference, test all your blues to see which ones look similar to your picture. Test your colored pencils on the paper you’re going to draw on. Everything else is grayed down using colored pencil shading in greys and less bright hues. If you look carefully, the only dominant color here is light blue-turquoise. Everything else should be less color intense. Make that particular color your main focus in colored pencil shading. Is it light or dark? Is it monochromatic or in full color? How do you decide? Look at your main reference to see the dominant color. Consider big picture first drawing in colored pencilĭecide on the overall theme of your colored pencil drawing. If you begin shading one spot and forget about the rest of your composition, you might end up having the drawing that has no consistency or unity in color and composition. However they become important only when the basic drawing is in place. Artists who draw in colored pencil pay attention to small things like details and textures, and they’re important. When you begin drawing in colored pencil, the aim is to copy what you see in front of you or in your reference. ![]() ![]() The Trieste was one of the earliest of the submersibles designed from the pressure hull outward as a way for a human crew to explore the deep ocean and ultimately, to explore the very bottom of the sea. Mather bring the origins of the deep submersible operations to the surface in their recent book Opening the Great Ocean Depths: The Bathyscape Trieste. While not as glamourous as the attack boats and boomers, research submersibles like the Trieste, Alvin and the NR-1 performed critical missions and often operated under the cloak of deep waters. During the Cold War that phrase referred to both how quiet the boats were as well as the often-clandestine nature of their work. So costly and risky was this manned descent into the Challenger Deep that no one has done it since. The United States Navy submarine branch has long carried the nickname as the “Silent Service”. ![]() Skeptics later criticized Piccard’s observations, claiming that they must have been hallucinating at such a depth, for it seemed impossible that anything could be found living in such inhospitable conditions. Unfortunately, they had no camera with them on that dive, and one of the external lights imploded from the extreme pressures of the deep so that could not have successfully photographed what they saw anyway. Can you imagine the fear and tension the two men must have felt as they descended silently for hours into the unblinking darkness, falling into depths no human being alive had been to? How they must have wondered if, and when, the hull of the Trieste II would begin to cave and buckle from the extreme pressure, or if it would implode suddenly and violently without warning? Even at that incredible depth, with unimaginable pressure of 16,000 pounds per square inch and utter blackness, Piccard and Walsh observed living organisms, swimming effortlessly about. It took over four hours to drop to the very bottom of the sea in the Challenger Deep. Jacques Piccard, the son of Auguste, and a Navy submariner, Don Walsh, took that record dive in 1951. In fact, it was the Trieste II that set the world record for the deepest manned dive in the ocean when it touched bottom in the Marianas Trench, in over 35,000 feet of water in 1951.Ī historical map diagram showing the Trieste in the Challenger Deep. Navy budget, the Trieste II was designed, built and outfitted for optimal use as military craft that just so happened to be capable of diving to extreme depths. Backed by the considerable capital of the U.S. Navy’s drive to gain the upper hand at all costs that fueled the costly construction of the Trieste’s predecessor, the Trieste II. It was determined that the ocean depths could be exploited for significant military advantages in the area of undersea communications via sonar (sound waves) and the gathering of intelligence on sunken enemy submarines. In the wake of World War II and the increasing global tensions of the cold war, the United States’ interests in undersea exploration came to be seen as an urgent priority. This early version of the Trieste did not get the financial backing and support it needed to mount continuing exploratory dives, so it was abandoned after a few years as unfeasible. ![]() Piccard had developed an ingenious method for allowing a pilot to control the buoyancy of the Trieste, alternately using a huge, 50-foot long tank filled with gasoline (which is lighter than seawater) and lead pellets as a counterweight or ballast, which could be released in controlled amounts allowing the Trieste to rise. It had the significant advancement of being controllable by the occupant/pilot so that it did not need to be tethered to a surface ship. The crew cabin was larger and roomier than the bathysphere and it had much thicker walls, making it able to withstand the higher pressures of deeper dives. Named after the Italian city that bankrolled the huge development costs for building the craft, it was much larger and sturdier than Beebe’s bathysphere. A brilliant inventor who was always looking for the next opportunity, he seized upon the scientific community’s fascination with exploring the deep sea in person and built the modern precursor to the manned submersible, the Trieste. Another visionary who pioneered the next major development in undersea exploration was a man named Auguste Piccard.
